Oil filters are a serious problem too.

Each filter still contains from 2 to 8 ounces of oil, even after they are initially drained.  The filter membrane retains the oil for years.  Some naughty people dispose of used filters in their trash, which is illegal because it is hazardous waste. No hazardous waste can be place in the regular trash…some states have up to a $1000 fine and some jail time for offenders.  Please do the right thing and recycle old oil filters.

Oil filters are recycled to become high carbon steel.  They are crushed into “bricks”, “pucks” or cubes and then sold to steel manufacturers.  The filter membrane, the gasket and the residual oil all provide carbon for the steel.

The picture at the right is of 15 oil filters that have been properly cleaned of old oil and compacted into a block of steel for recycling at a foundry.
